Waterfall

Our first stop of the day was at this waterfall. Also here were Icelandic horses to pet.

Vatnajokull Glacier

Seeing the Vatnajokull glacier up close and its lagoon made this day what I think was the best day of our tour. We had some rain at the beginning and end of the tour but the rest of the day was very nice.

The Lagoon

Icebergs that had broken off from the glacier were in the lagoon. So pretty with the clouds reflected on the water.

More of the Lagoon

The iceberg here were slowly moving to the Atlantic Ocean while also depositing ice on a black sand beach. I think this was the best sight of the tour. You need a combination for this view: a glacier, a lagoon, a black sand beach, and the Atlantic Ocean, very possibly the only place in the world that you would have all these elements.

Ice on the Beach

Big chunks of ice were deposited on the black sand beach. Erik, our tour director, said that he had never seen so much ice on the beach. We had a real treat.

A big chunk of ice on the beach, looking like a crystal or a large piece of glass.

Turf Church

Our last stop of the day was at the Hof turf church, where the roof and sides of the church were covered with turf. It is still an operating church, built 1883. Burials are above–ground. It was raining here so I didn’t take as many photos of the church and the grounds that I would have had otherwise.

No Northern Lights tonight.

I have put the photos I took this day on a slideshow. Go to
