Zagreb Upper Town

After our hike this morning at the Plitvice Lakes National Park and a lunch on the road, we arrived in Zagreb. Zagreb is the capital of Croatia and its largest city. Our bus let us off at the Upper Town of Old Town Zagreb. We were led by a local guide.

Zagreb Upper Town

St. Mark’s Church

Our first major site in the Upper Town was the beautiful St. Mark’s Church with its tiled roof. It started out as a parish church, built as early as the 13th century. It was reconstructed in the latter half of the 14th century into a Gothic church, Catholic.

Upper Town Overlook

An overlook in the Upper Town gave us great views of the Lower Town of Zagreb and beyond.

The Strossmarte, next to the overlook, is an entertainment area complete with much folk art.

Stone Gate

In 1731, a fire destroyed every part of Stone Gate except a painting of the Virgin and Child. Later, the inside of the gate where the painting hangs became a church.

Zagreb Cathedral

Now back in the Upper Town, the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary or just called the Zagreb Cathedral, Catholic. The first cathedral here was destroyed by a Tarter attack in the 13th century. The cathedral was rebuilt and renovated after an earthquake in 1880.
