Panorama Route

Today, we drove from Kruger National Park to Johannesburg along the Panorama Route in South Africa’s Mpumalanga Province. Photo: Vacant vendor stands near the beginning of the route.

Lisbon Falls

Our next stop was at Lisbon Falls, which was named by Portuguese explorers. They are the highest waterfalls in Mpumalanga Province.

Bourke’s Luck Potholes and Lichen Trail

Our next stop was at the Bourke’s Luck Potholes and Lichen Trail. The trail was steep going down and, of course, steeper coming back up. Most of the trail was very safe to take, though in places there were alternate paths with ones safer. Two rivers, the Treur and Blyde Rivers, meet here.

Bourke’s Luck Potholes

A pothole or kettle is “a shallow, sediment–filled body of water.” The rock formations above the potholes were created by water erosion over thousand of years.

Blyde River Canyon

Our next stop was at the Blyde River Canyon, which is 16 miles long and one of the earth’s largest canyons. The three formations on the left of the photo are The Three Rondavels, so–called as they resemble the rondavels (circular houses) of African homesteads.

On the Road Again

Back on the road. We stopped for lunch and then later for a rest stop before we reached Johannesburg.

Almost in Johannesburg

The African sun set before we reached Johnannesburg (Joburg for short as the South Africans call it). We would spend two nights in Johannesburg.

I have put my photos of the Panorama Route on a slideshow. Go to
