On a photo tour to the Barranco district of Lima, though we first stopped in the Miraflores district by the coast.

Now we are in Barranco, considered the Bohemian and artsy district of Lima.

In the 19th century, Barranco was a fashionable beach resort and both colonial-style and Republican-style (referring to the time after independence from Spain in 1821) houses were built.

At the bottom of the park is a monument to Chabuca Granda, who was a famous Peruvian poet, singer, and composer. Next to her statue is one of a Peruvian riding horse, which was the subject of one of her songs.

In the park, sculptures of vultures. There are vultures flying all over Lima.

I don't know who the man in this statue is but the naked lady below the bust is interesting.

The Bridge of Sighs (Puenta de los Banos), built 1876. Legend has it that if you make a wish and are able to cross the bridge without breathing, your wish will come true. (Photo taken on another photo tour. It was uncrowded when I was first there with more people on the second time, later in the day.)

Across from the park is La Ermita, the Heritage. Legend has it that a group of fishermen got lost at sea but were able to get their bearings by seeing an illuminated cross along the coast. To celebrate their miracle, the fishermen built a chapel here at the spot where they saw the cross. The church is closed due to earthquake damage.

Perhaps an unwanted visitor to the park, an enormous insect.

The Bridge of Sighs crosses a ravine, the Bajada de los Banos. At the end of the walkway, is a collection of murals. "Equilibrio" means "Balance."

In some areas of Peru, you see many roof ornaments but mainly of bulls. Here are ones of people and swans. They are always in pairs and probably have been placed for good luck.

The main church was closed but there was a small opening in a chapel at the front of the church so this photo of the inside of the church could be taken.

Murals and campaign posters on top. An election is being held in a few months and campaign posters were everywhere in Peru.

You see motorcycle taxis, similar to the tuk tuks in Thailand, mainly in areas outside central Lima, but here is one. They are very decorative.

On the cart, "JUAN SIN MIEDO AYACHUCHO LIMA," which I believe means that Juan is without fear driving the bus from Ayachucho in the Peruvian highlands to Lima. "Juan Without Fear" is a Brothers Grimm fairytale. Whether the lions are protecting Juan or threatening him, I do not know.

My favorite mural, one of the Beattles. It is on a side street, so not easy to find. "Garaje no estacionar" means "garage no parking."
