The Little Mermaid statue at the Langeline Pier. She was a gift to Copenhagen in 1909 by Carl Jacobsen of Carlsberg beer fame and insipired by the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale "The Little Mermaid," about a mermaid who gave up everything to be with a young price she fell in love with but with the prince marrying someone else. She was 100 years old on August 23, 2013.

"Every morning and evening she swims to the surface from the bottom of the sea, and perched on her rock, she stares longingly towards the shore hoping to catch a glimpse of her beloved prince."

Nearby in the park is the Gefion Fountain, 1908, of the goddess who was given one night to steal part of Sweden to make Denmark's main island, Zealand (Sjaelland).

She made her four sons into oxen to get the job done.

Across from the statue is St. Alban's Church, which is part of the Church of England, built from 1885 to 1887 for the English Anglican residents of Copenhagen.

Our next stop, at Amalienborg Palace and Square, the home of Queen Margrethe II, her husband, and others of the royal family. The flag is flying, which means that the queen is in residence.

The equestrian statue of King Frederick V, who envisioned this square, named also Frederikstaden, to be the center of the planned town of Copenhagen.

Seen from the palace is Frederik's Church, also known as the Marble Church, an Evangelical Lutheran church. It was designed in 1740, its foundation stone laid in 1754, then left uncompleted for 150 years, and finally opened in 1894.

Back on our bus, passing Nyhavn (New Harbor), a 17th-century canal with 18th-century townhouses. Hans Christian Anderson lived here for 18 years. Today, it is a restaurant and entertainment center.

The Royal Theatre, built 1874. The statue on the left is of Adam Oehlenschlage (1779-1850), considered to be Denmark's greatest playwright.

The statue on the right is of Ludwig Holberg (1684-1754), a Danish-Norwegian writer, historian, auther, and playwright.

Passing Rosenberg Castle, built by King Christian IV in the early 1600s as a summer residence. It houses the Danish crown jewels and other royal possessions.

There are many modern buildings (and also much graffiti in some areas) in Copenhagen. Some of the new buildings are attractive, some are not and often out of place next to old buildings.

Main entrance to the world famous Tivoli Gardens, an amusement park and pleasure garden for all ages. It is the second oldest amusement park in the world, opening in 1843. Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, an art museum founded in 1888 by Carl Jacobsen of Carlsberg beer fame.

The National Museum of Denmark, presently having an exhibit of the White Buses of 1945.

The White Buses was a joint operation by the Swedish Red Cross and the Danish government in the spring of 1945 to rescue those in concentration camps under Nazi control and to transport them to Sweden, a neutral country during the war.

Christianborg Palace, since 1849 the seat of the Danish parliament. It also houses the prime minister's office and the Supreme Court, with some parts still used by the Royal Family. The first Christiansborg Palace was built in the 12th century but is now in ruins. The building here dates back only to 1928.
