Seen on our sightseeing drive around Salt Lake City: the City and County Building, built 1894, in the "Richardson Romanesque" style. It is the first building in the world to be retrofitted with base isolators that will allow it to float during an earthquake. There two major faults in Salt Lake City that could cause an earthquake with a magnitude as high as 7.5.

Its clock tower is topped with a statue of Columbia, which is an historic and poetic name for the USA.

Salt Lake City has many buildings that were built in the 19th and early 20th century, many on the National Register of Historic Places or designated National Historic Landmarks.

The Eagle Gate, erected in 1859, though replaced several times since then. It is located at what once was the entrance to Brigham Young's (see Day 1 album) property.

The Beehive House, a National Historic Landmark, which served as the official residence of Brigham Young when he was President of the Latter Day Saints Church and Governor of the Utah Territory.

The Salt Lake Temple of the Latter Day Saints in Temple Square, with its construction started in 1853 and its dedication in 1893. It is the most famous building in Salt Lake City. We would visit Temple Square the next day.

The Utah State Capitol Building (Salt Lake City is Utah's capital). The building was completed in 1914 and was patterned after the U.S. Capitol Building.

On our way up the hill to the medical center: snow on the ground. There wasn't much snow left in the city when we were there--only in the mountains.
