Blue Mountains

Day 2. Today, I went on an optional full–day Blue Mountains with Featherdale Wildlife tour. The Blue Mountains are about 31 miles from Sydney. First, we took a ride down a mountain on the Scenic Railway, the world’s steepest passenger railway.

Australian Bush

After getting off the train, we took a walk through the Australian Bush, which means a wooded area that is not a dense forest.

Scenic Railway Sculpture Show

Along the pathway, was a outdoor sculpture show. Here was one where items sparkle.

Cable Car

We took the cable car up the mountain, and then after a visit to a really nice gift store, we took the cable car back down again. The cable car ride offered some nice views of the canyon.

Meat Pies

Dana, our tour director, recommended that we have meat pies for lunch in Katoomba, the main town in the Blue Mountains. Meat pies are the national dish in both Australia and New Zealand. Available in the restaurant some of us went to were steak, chicken, and kangaroo meat pies among other pies. The cost of the tender steak, bacon, & cheese pie was $7.50 Australian––only about $5.50U.S.

Featherdale Wildlife Park

Our last stop on our tour was at the fascinating Featherdale Wildlife Park, where we got to see the animals that Australia is famous for: koala bears, kangaroos, and penguins, among many other animals. In the photo, a koala bear is eating its favorite good: eucalyptus leaves.

Kangaroos–Movie

Many kangaroos were roaming free in the park, and if you wished, you could feed them. I caught this kangaroo hopping around––quite a sight to see.

Little Penguins–Movie

A favorite of mine was the little penguins. Penguins have colonies in many places in both New Zealand and Australia. You can watch them in the water in this movie. This movie is also on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sm6He5nMPuo After visiting the park, we went back to Sydney.
