Snowcoaches lined up to take us through Yellowstone National Park.

These snowcoaches were made by Bombardier and used also by the U.S. military. Each had a name: ours was Rosebud.

We fit nine people in the snowcoach plus our driver--a bit crowded.

Entering Yellowstone National Park. We left from the state of Montana but were soon in the state of Wyoming after entering the park.

Be Bear Aware. There are both grizzly (brown) and black bears in the park, but they sleep around the clock during the winter.

A bison on the side of the road. It is eating vegetation in the river. Bison, not buffalo, is the correct term for this animal. Buffalo refer to the Asian water buffalo and the African buffalo. But no need to change the lyrics "Oh, give me a home, where the buffalo roam." Bison in the U.S. have been called "buffalo" for many years.

We stopped here for a rest break. The temperature today is pretty mild compared to what it could have been at this time of year.

The estimated time for the next eruption of the Old Faithful Geyser. It erupts every 35 to 120 minutes. The time of the next eruption is predicted from the duration of the current eruption. The longer the eruption lasts, the longer the interval to the next eruption. We didn't make the 9;30 a.m. plus or minus 10 minutes one.

A geyser basin. Geysers are springs that tubulently discharge hot water through a vent in the earth's surface accompanied by steam. The water is heated from underground volcanic activity. Much of Yellowstone sits inside an ancient volcanic caldera (the exploded crater of a volcano). Two-thirds of the world's geysers are located in Yellowstone.

Now we are at the Old Faithful Geyser, probably the most famous geyser in the world. It is on the right of the photo with steam coming out of it. We are here to see the approximate 11:15 a.m. eruption.

The steam now coming out of Old Faithful is called "pre-play," which can last up to 20 minutes and reach 20 feet in height.

After viewing Old Faithful, we ate lunch at the Geyser Grill in the Old Faithful Snow Lodge.

On the menu: Bozone, Moose Drool, and Old Faithful Ale. There was also bison on the menu.

There are four basic thermal features: geysers, hot springs, famaroles (holes or vents from which steam rushes into the air), and mudpots (rising steam spurts mud into the air). A mudpot is in the middle front of the photo. It makes a plopping-like sound.
