Street Art Walk, Lisbon

On Day 4 in Lisbon, I took a Street Art Walk. I signed up for it on www.viator. There are a number of street art tours listed on their website. My tour started in the Bairro Alto district of Lisbon, which is on a hill above the Baixa district. I hadn’t been to the Bairro Alto district on my last trip to Lisbon, so I was interested in seeing it. Bairro Alto is hilly and steep and I think this was the hardest tour for me on my trip as my swollen ligament in my foot still had not healed. However, I enjoyed the tour but Lisbon has many beautiful murals that we didn’t see on the tour, so perhaps a different street art tour or a combination of street art tours may be something to consider. Bairro Alto

There are many clubs in Bairro Alto and also a number of hostels. We looked at the street art on this club’s front.

Hidden Street Art

This small street art was inserted into a wall. It says, “I am not what happened to me. I am what I choose to become.”

Bairro Alto Cable Car

A cable car will take you up and down this very steep street. We didn’t take it but walked down the hill instead. Lisbon is built on seven hills. It is a great city to walk around but you do have help from both cable cars and trams to navigate the hills.

Carnation Revolution Mural

This mural refers to the Carnation Revolution was a 25 April, 1974, military coup in Lisbon which overthrew the authoritarian Estado Novo regime. Almost no shots were fired and citizens placed carnations in the soldiers’ guns and on their uniforms.

Alfama District

The tour continued across part of the Baixa district (level ground) to the Alfama district, the birthplace of fado music and another hilly district. I left the tour here (enough walking!) and had lunch nearby.

I put my photos of the Lisbon Street Art Walk on a slideshow. Go to http://www.peggysphotos.com/lisbon–street–art–walk/ (Slide Shows, Western Europe, Portugal, “Lisbon Street Art Walk.”

This evening, I met my Globus tour group, about 40 of us, all from the United States except for one couple from Australia and one couple from New Zealand.
