“Norway in a Nutshell” Tour

Our tour group went on a “Norway in a Nutshell” Tour today from Bergen to Flam and then back to Bergen. We traveled by three trains, a car ferry, and a bus on the all–day tour. The tour includes great views of the Norwegian fjords and countryside. A very enjoyable day, especially since we didn’t have any rain.

At Voss

At Voss, we changed from the train to a bus for our ride to Gudvangen.

We drove to high in the mountains with beautiful scenery.

Then down to the valley below on a road with an 18% grade with many hairpin turns.

At Gudvangen, we got aboard a car ferry that would take us through the fjords and the Norwegian countryside along the water.

Coming into Flam

We reached Flam, our destination, where we ate lunch. Soon we were off again.

The Flam Railway

We took the Flam Railway from Flam to Myrdal. The Flam Railway is 12.6 miles (20.2 kilometers) long and is a branch of the 311–mile (500–km) Bergen Railway from Bergen to Oslo. It took 20 years to construct and was completed in 1944. It has 20 tunnels and takes 50 minutes from Flam to Myrdal.

Kiosfossen Waterfall

The Flam Railway made a 5–minute stop at the Kiosfossen Waterfall and we were able to get off the train to take photos of the 738–foot (225–m) waterfall.

At Myrdal, we exited the Flam Railway and boarded another train that would take us back to Bergen.

We arrived back in Bergen in time for dinner. I wasn’t hungry so didn’t go out for it. Anyway, we needed to pack for tomorrow’s journey to Oslo. I very much enjoyed the “Norway in a Nutshell” tour. It was definitely a highlight.
