Our next sightseeing for the day was The Tomb of Etimad ud Doulah (also spelled Itimad-ud-Daulah).

The tomb was built by Itimad-ud-Daulah's daughter Nur Jahan for her father. She was the wife of the fourth Mughal emperor, Jahangir. Photo: the gate to the tomb.

The tomb, begun in 1622, took 12 years to build. It is the first tomb in India to be built entirely of marble and is considered to be the forerunner of the Taj Mahal. It is sometimes called the "Baby Taj."

Here there were painted floral patterns with bouquets, trees, fruit, and wine decanters and also inlaid semi-precious stones.

Our next stop was at the Red Fort which served as the imperial city of the Mughal rulers, built by Emperor Akbar between 1565 and 1573. It is a very large complex with about 1.5 miles (2.5 km) of enclosed walls.

The fort is mainly built of sandstone with some marble buildings.

I don't remember what this interesting structure was. A royal bath?

Here we got a view (only a partial one because of the air pollution) of the Taj Mahal.

Somewhat closer-up view. Emperor Shah Jahan, who built the Taj Mahal, was imprisioned by his son Aurangzeb in Agra Fort, from which he had a view of the Taj Mahal (we can assume he had a much clearer view of it).

The casket of John Russell Colvin. Born May 29, 1857; died at the fort on September 9, 1857, of cholera during the peak of the 1857 Indian Rebellion. After the defeat of the Mughals, Agra Fort became a British military garrison.

Colvin was considered a hero; hence, his burial here at Agra Fort.
