We are now in Orchha, a medieval town founded in 1531 on the River Betwa.

Orchha was the capital of the Bundela kings until 1738. They built palaces, pavilons, a fort, and chatrries (memorials) to the rulers of Orchha. This is one of the memorials.

There are a total of 14 Chatrries. They have domed or pinnacles on top and have open sides.

We saw this one later from the bus: the Chaturbhuj Temple. The temple is dedicated to the Hindu god Lord Vishnu (his idol is placed in it). Legend has it that the wife of Raja Madhukar Singh, who built the temple, wanted to put her idol of Lord Rama that she had in her apartment into the temple. But the idol refused to move, so the idol of Lord Vishnu was placed there. The temple was completed by Raja Madhukar Singh's son in the 17th century.

Also built in Orchha was a fort/palace complex built from 1560 to the mid-1600s. We also made only a photo stop of it. A good day could be spent here in Orchha. We spent only a couple of hours.

Getting dark. Our bus helper is saying a Hindu prayer--maybe thanking the gods that we made our bus trip without an accident.

At our hotel: a buffet dinner. Inside the foil was a very small and delicious baked potato that tasted just like the bigger ones that we have in our markets. Maybe the small-sized one are only grown in India.
