We started our early today from Halifax on our Maritime big bus.

And ran into a lot of fog.

Which cleared up and gave us some views of the leaves changing color.

We stopped for at a small town called Amherst for a rest break and to buy food for a later picnic lunch. Amherst has many large sandstone buildings. The town was founded in 1764 by English settlers from Yorkshire, who were joined later by Loyalists who fled the American colonies during the American Revolution.

Back on the bus and entering New Brunswick. Government and many other signs are in both English and French in most parts of Canada, giving both languages equal status.

Leaves changing color.

We have gone through St. John and are viewing the Bay of Fundy. Twice a day the tide comes in and then goes out. The tides are the highest in the world and the areas in the photo that look like mud will be entirely covered with water when the tide comes in. During one tide cycle, 160 billion tonnes of seawater flows in and out of the Bay of Fundy, more than the combined flow of all the world's freshwater rivers.

We are now on our way to Hopewell Rocks. Some of the roads are hilly.

We are now at the Fundy National Park to see the Hopewell Rocks.

Our local guide. The visitors center is open only from the middle of May to the middle of October as there is much snow here in the winter. Our guide said that this last winter was really bad and she had a view of only snow from her kitchen window for months.

The staircase of 99 stairs (one of my tour mates counted several more than that number). However, it was a rather easy walk down and climb back up with many places to rest.

A close-up of the bottom of the rocks showing the height of the water at high tide. The tide can be as high as 52 feet (16 m) and it is the highest tide anywhere in the world. There is a space of time when it is safe to be at the bottom.

Time to eat my sandwich which I bought at the Art of Eating Deli in Amherst: ham and swiss on raisin bread (they offered even more interesting combinations). Actually, it was very tasty.

A craft shop is here. We didn't stop and it probably wouldn't have been open as many stores, restaurants, and motels were already closed for the season, which is usually about mid-May to late September.

We are now on the Confederation Bridge that joins New Brunswick with Prince Edward Island. The bridge opened in 1997. There was a debate as to whether to change from a ferry service here to a bridge that would allow transportation to the island during the winter when the Gulf of St. Lawrence was frozen over, preventing the ferry from operating. Some people on Prince Edward Island thought it would adversely affect their way of life and livelihood by having visitors year-round. An election was held and 59.4% of the residents voted for the bridge.

The bridge is 8 miles (12.9 k) long and curves before the end. It is the longest bridge in the world over ice-covered waters. Tolls are round-trip only and are collected when leaving the island.

We stopped for a rest break. For sale was Raspberry Cordial, the drink featured in the book "Anne of Green Gables." We were to visit the Green Gables tomorrow.

And sacks of Prince Edward Island potatoes. Many potatoes are grown on the island.

Probably closed but here is a Cows ice cream shop. I was told that Cows ice cream is very good.

Caravan treated us to dinner at this restaurant tonight.

It was the Home of the Island's Longest Salad Bar.

We could order lobster or another dish. My lobster looked better than it tasted as it was mealy, meaning it probably had been frozen, not a fresh one, but the salad bar and desert were good.
