The Siege of Sarajevo lasted from April 6, 1992, to February 29, 1996, making it the longest siege of a capital city in the times of modern warfare. The city was cutoff by the Serbian forces and snipers were shooting anything that moved in the city.

The Winter Olympics were held in Sarajevo in 1984. In 1992, it was a city under siege.

Our group entering the tunnel. It was built by the Bosnian army in Bosnian-controlled terrority in 1993 to provide a route to bring food, war supplies, and humanitarian aid into the city and also to allow people to escape from the city.

Inside the tunnel. The tunnel was dug from both of its entrances and took about 4 months to build. It consisted of 160 meters of covered trenches on one side, which ended in a garage of an apartment building, 340 meters of actual tunnel which went under the airport under UN control, and 340 meters of covered trenches ending at where we are now, for a total distance of a little over 1/2 mile.

We are now heading to the border with Serbia, which was a short distance from the tunnel. Some things were pointed out by our local guide--signs telling you which country you were in and the Serbian policemen. I couldn't see any of these from my seat on the bus.

Seen on the main road going back to our hotel. The blue tower is the Avaz Twist Tower, headquarters of a Bosnian newspaper, 557 1/2 feet (176 m) tall.

The yellow Holiday Inn, which was built for the 1984 Winter Olympics. Reporters covering the Bosnian War stayed here. The hotel was regulary shelled. "From the hotel you didn't go out to the war, the war came to you," Martin Bell, former BBC correspondent.

On our hotel's cross street is a very famous spot, which is being pointed out by our local guide.

This is the exact spot where Archduke Franz Ferinand, nephew of the Emperior Franz Joseph and heir to he Austro-Hungarian Empire, and his wife, Sophie, were assassinated on June 28, 1914, which was the spark that ignited World War I.

Windows of a museum on the corner commemorating the event. Earlier in the day, there was a first assassination attempt of the archduke: a bomb was thrown at his car, but it rolled off the car and wounded an officer and some bystanders.

When later in the day the archduke went to visit the injured officer, his motor procession made a wrong turn. Another assassin was in the area and he was successful in killing the archduke and his wife. Plaque on the museum's wall.

The assassin's name was Gavrilo Princip, a Serbian nationalist, who wanted Serbian independence from the Austro-Hungarian empire. Serbia was blamed for the attack, resulting in the conflict leading to World War I.
